Faces of the Farm ~ Meet Melissa!

One of the most compelling elements of Common Good is the sense of community that is being fostered on the farm. At any given time one can see faces, young and old, from different backgrounds, gathered on the farm to lend a hand, attend a workshop, and engage in a lively conversation. We want to share some of these faces with you. Each week we will take a moment to learn a little bit more about our community members. We hope you will visit us and become one of our Faces of the Farm. Every Friday we will feature a new "face of the farm." Meet Melissa! Most of our visitors have already met our Farm Manager, Melissa. Melissa joined Common Good City Farm in the summer of 2014 as our Summer Youth Program Coordinator. That summer, she taught our Youth Interns all about hard work and farming. Because of her positive attitude and wonderful green thumb, we couldn't think of a better person to take over as Farm Manager when the position opened up. “Common Good City Farm has the strongest sense of community that i’ve ever encountered.” Melissa says, “My favorite thing about it is the connection and community it builds between our volunteers, our CSA members, the kids, the neighbors, and the staff. What drew me to CGCF is how well the farm carries out its mission of really providing affordable locals foods as well as education for the community.” If you ever visit the farm, you’re guaranteed to get a warm and sunny welcome from Melissa. Melissa is excited about the upcoming summer season, having spent all winter in the greenhouse preparing for planting. Now that the warm weather is upon us, Melissa has already started creating some inventive new planting spaces on the farm, including hanging herb gardens from reclaimed wooden pallets and a new bio-intensive region. Melissa dreams of “growing as much food as we possibly can, as much as we can fit in our space!” We love her goal of capitalizing on space right here in our Nation’s Capital!
