2014 SYP ~ Meet Desiree
Desiree, a 16-year-old Duke Ellington student, is one of our stellar Summer Youth Program Participants. From a young age, Desiree's grandmother sparked her interest in gardening. As she began to think about colleges and career paths, Desiree started to think that agriculture might be a career she was interested in. So, when it came time to look for a summer job, Common Good City Farm seemed like a perfect fit. When asked what about the most surprising thing that she has learned during her 4 weeks at the farm, she said that she was surprised that she didn't even realize some of her habits were unhealthy. After helping to grow fresh produce and working with chefs and Common Good staff to prepare an abundance of healthy meals and snacks, Desiree is hooked on eating healthy. She has learned a lot about how to create recipes using fresh ingredients and has eagerly been sharing what she has learned with her family. Desiree took to the farm like a natural and has even been staying after her work day ends to volunteer during our open hours, "I just love being here. I adore this place!" Music to our ears!
