‘THE GREEN GETTERS’ - SUMMER YOUTH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

McKinley Tech students have joined the Common Good City Farm team for a Youth Internship Program that runs from June - August. Led by Farm Educator, Jaime, these students, better known as ‘The Green Getters’ , are gaining leadership skills by planning community events, encouraging youth to learn more about caring for the environment, and making healthy eating choices using organic, locally grown produce. This is the first year Common Good is piloting a youth internship program in collaboration with McKinley Tech.

In this 6-week program, students have learned to maintain the garden through seed starting, bed prep, transplanting, and cooking with the fresh food that they have grown. Students also learned about the benefits of composting and created their own compost bin. Students have also participated in herbalism workshop making their herbals salves, tea, and herbal medicine and will be participating other activities such as beekeeping, pickling/fermentation and cooking demonstrations.

The Green Getters Program is an innovative, interactive experience that has created an environment where students can get learn , grow, and gain access to fresh produce for free.

This year CGCF’s Community Engagement, Program Manager initiated a new community youth program that focuses on youth-led business creation. The program is called R.I.C.H. Kids (Resources Inspire Children Higher). Youth participants combine elements of food justice, entrepreneurship and community building with life skills and job readiness. Youth participants will learn from & collaborate with local professionals/workshop instructors (chefs, artisans & community leaders) to make value-added products, and sell those products and produce back to their communities through their local farmers market.
