Faces of the Farm

Meet Juju

Juju is Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture's Culinary Educator and SNAP Outreach Coordinator. She travels with Arcadia's mobile market and teaches people how to prepare the food sold at the market. She also does food demos at the mobile market. We sell our produce as part of our Small Enterprise program to Arcadia Mobile Market through Juju. Juju comes on the farm every week to visit and to collect our produce! She has been coming to the farm for 2 years, and she says what she loves about Common Good is that it’s in the “heart of the city” and is a meeting place for all kinds of people.

Recipe of the Week: Eggplant Ratatouille

We have been harvesting a lot of eggplants at the farm this week! Eggplant is a great source of fiber and is often used as a meat substitute in meals. It is also a great source of potassium. Check out this recipe that features eggplant and uses an abundance of other healthy vegetables!

Faces of the Farm

washing carrotsMeet JaQuan
JaQuan felt lucky to live across the street from a baseball field when he was growing up in public housing in a struggling pocket of Washington DC. It’s where he spent a lot of time playing ball or hanging out with friends after school.

It was a surprise the day the field was fenced off and equipment started digging up the only patch of green for blocks around. And JaQuan was even more surprised – and confused – when he saw the field becoming a farm. A farm in LeDroit Park: it was something he had never heard of and could not fathom.

Recipe of the Week: Green Tomato Salsa

As the weather gets colder, many gardens are left with green tomatoes on the vine that just won't ripen. However, unripe green tomatoes can be delicious just like red ones! Green tomatoes are firmer, more tart, and crunchier than red tomatoes, and can be prepared many different ways, such as frying, baking, or pickling. Check out this recipe for green tomato salsa for an easy way to use some of those green tomatoes!

We had a great time at the Green Festival!

Thank you to everyone who voted for us online and visited us at the DC Green Festival this past weekend. We were honored to be a finalist for the Ford Community Green Grant, and our staff and youth interns had a great time talking with supporters at the Green Festival. A big congratulations to our partner Arcadia for winning the $5,000 prize from Ford.

Faces of the Farm

Meet Vivian!

Vivian is a long-time friend of the farm. Originally from Liberia, Vivian now lives in the neighborhood and has been coming to the farm since it was first started in Ledroit Park. When Vivian visits the farm, she likes to harvest and occasionally weed. Her favorite vegetables are corn, collards, okra, and eggplants. She also introduced us to the delicious and nutritious sweet potato green! In the picture, Vivian is helping us sort tomatoes.
